THANK YOU! $4,590 Raised in 2024

Charity Drawing

$4,590 raised at CaptainCon 2024
for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute
to fight Cancer

Every year at CaptainCon, we hold a charity drawing to support a local non-profit organization doing important work to help improve the lives of those around us. We may be pirates, but we’re compassionate pirates who have raised thousands of dollars for good causes. For 2024, we’re supporting The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Jimmy Fund.

A world leader in cancer research and treatment, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was founded in 1947 by Dr. Sidney Farber and fortified by their historic partner,  the Dana Foundation. Dana-Farber is renowned for using its discoveries  to improve the treatment of adults and children with cancer. It is the  founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. It is also a federally designated Center for AIDS Research and a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Dana-Farber is consistently ranked as the number one cancer hospital in New England by U.S. News & World Report.

Dana-Farber has personally touched the lives of family of the CaptainCon Crew, so it was an obvious choice for us to take an opportunity to support those who have helped our loved ones.

The Jimmy Fund, established in Boston in 1948, is comprised of community-based fundraising events and other virtual and in-person programs that directly benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s lifesaving mission to provide compassionate patient care and groundbreaking cancer research for children and adults.

You can learn more about Dana-Farber at their website.

How it Works

That’s the easy part. Companies, game stores, and individual gamers from around the community all donate items to the drawing prize pool. At the show, attendees can buy tickets to the drawing throughout Friday and Saturday. On Saturday night, we all gather in the Grand Ballroom for the drawing. We pull a ticket from the hat (OK, it’s usually a storage tote by that point because we sold so many tickets) and read the number. If your number comes up, you come to the front, pick a prize from the drawing prize pool, have your photo taken with your prize, and walk away with something cool for supporting a good cause while we draw the next ticket. We keep going like this until every prize in the pool has been claimed.

Because everything is donated for the prize pool and the convention covers the logistics like permits and such, 100% of the money from selling drawing tickets goes to the charity.
