Volunteer
Want to be part of CaptainCon?
We’re always looking for new hands for the crew. If you’d like to be part of CaptainCon as a convention volunteer, fill out the form on this page to tell us about yourself and we’ll get in touch about next steps.
Volunteer roles include:
Staffing the Board Game Library and Captain’s Log tables
Helping with convention registration/check-in
Helping set up and take down the show
Unloading supplies from storage on Thursday afternoon and returning them Sunday night
Supporting event runners by making sure they have what they need
Benefits of Volunteering:
All volunteers will earn 5 Captain’s Log points for each 4-hour volunteer shift they cover. All volunteers will also be given vouchers to use at the concessions table during their shifts; we can’t have the crew suffering from scurvy.
In addition, volunteers are given comp badges and other signs of our thanks based on the number of 4-hour volunteer shifts covered:
1 shift = a free 1 day badge (good for the day of your shift)
2 shifts = a full weekend convention badge
3 shifts = a full weekend convention badge and a t-shirt
4+ shifts = a full weekend convention badge, a t-shirt, a challenge coin, and possible other swag
5+ shifts and other rock stars = a full weekend convention badge, a t-shirt, a challenge coin, other swag, and an invitation to dinner with the team on Sunday night
Volunteer Expectations/Requirements:
As a volunteer for CaptainCon, you help us make the convention a success and are the public face of the show. As a vital role, we want to make sure you know the expectations. A volunteer is expected to be:
In compliance with all convention policies - make sure you read, understand, and follow all the general attendee policies for CaptainCon. These apply to all attendees, including volunteers. Further, for many of these you will be a first point of contact for an attendee who needs to report a violation of one. Needless to say, you are in a position of trust with the CaptainCon team, so violations of convention policies/rules by volunteers will be taken very seriously and enforced vigorously.
Punctual – arrive to your shift a few minutes early to acclimate yourself to the area & what your tasks are for that shift.
Neat & Clean – please look clean and well-groomed/dressed as a representative of the convention. We don’t want to cramp your style, but do ask that you have on clean clothes that are appropriate to a community of kids through adults i.e. no pajamas, offensive t-shirts, etc).
Sober – You are the front line of the convention so you need to have your wits about you while on your volunteer shift. If you show up to your shift under the influence or appear intoxicated while on your shift, you will be asked to leave the shift and not given credit for the shift toward any volunteer benefits based on number of shifts covered. If we have to remove you from a second shift for this behavior, you will be removed from all other volunteer shifts and not be welcome back as a future volunteer. This is not something we take lightly.
Friendly / Professional – Again as a representative of the convention, we ask that you be helpful and caring during your shift. You may be the first point of contact for a convention goer. Treat everyone with respect as you would want to be treated.
A Good Communicator - We understand, life happens, we just ask that you talk to us. If something comes up that you can’t cover a shift you’ve volunteered for, contact us as soon as possible to let us know so that we can make plans. If you leave us hanging with a no-call no-show you may not be asked back as a volunteer in the future. While covering your shift, if a problem comes up, remember that it’s always better to ask than guess - call us on the radio for backup when needed for problems. Lastly, always pass on information about any reports of violations of convention policies by attendees. In short, we can’t fix things we don’t know about, so help us out.
